“Saining is the Scottish Folk magic act of purification. It’s similar to the idea of smudging but very different.”

There were once 9 Maidens…

“In the book The Quest for the Nine Maidens, I have shown that these weird sisters are merely one of multifarious representations of a remarkably long-lived institution that underpins and infuses the mythology and folklore of the Celtic, Scandinavian and Iberian worlds and beyond in a timescale that seems to have lasted for millennia. For what the past two decades of research have shown me is that whether they hide behind the names of early Christian saints or Gaulish druidesses, Valkyries or Muses there was a sisterhood known to historians in the Classical world and remembered by that other strange sisterhood, the witches as late as the 16th century in Scotland, and who are remembered in a cave painting from near the dawn of time in Catalonia (El Cogul) but have almost been forgotten by the modern world.”

Raunacht #1: Letting Go of the Old

In Bavaria during Winter time, there is an old tradition still practiced nowadays: die Raunächte, also known as the 12 Rough Nights of the Wild Hunt. Though it is considered a Christian tradition it is deeply embedded in Paganism. During that time loose botanical incense is being burnt on the stove in a special pan (since I don’t have one of these, I use a small cast iron pan instead).

The Rough Nights are a deeply spiritual time, a time between time, a withdrawal ideal for reflection, inner work and preparation for the new year to come. The silence of Nature only to be matched by the silence within.

As the calendrical year comes to an end, so does another year in our personal growth. Take a moment to be thankful for the lessons, people & good things that have happened to you this year. Be proud of your achievements & rejoice.

Ask yourself, however, if there is still some unfinished business lingering. Do you need closure in some areas of your life? Now is a good time to do so, as you don’t want to drag old things/energies/patterns with you into the new year.

Now, ask yourself in all honesty if there are things/patterns/habits that hinder your growth & weigh you down. Things that you would wholeheartedly like to give up & let go in order to be a better person and/or move on with your life.

Write these things down on a piece of paper, focusing on the peace and the joy you will feel once these things will belong to the past and just be a memory. Keep the list short as these are things are more than just words, they will have to be followed by concrete actions in your daily life.

Now fold the piece of paper and burn it in the flame of a candle, feeling the relief of a burden taken off your shoulders. Take a deep breath, feel the warmth of the candle. Notice how much more relaxed and peaceful you feel.

A Painful Birthday

Birthday Candle Purple

Today is a rather painful day for me as this is my 40th birthday. It feels like a big slap on my face. Suddenly the numbers don’t make sense as they don’t match the face in the mirror. Suddenly I find myself one step closer to my crone years.
Time flies but where does it go? No one knows. I feel sad. I feel angry. Yet I shouldn’t have the right to complain since I’m alive and well while others have been less fortunate.
I’ve had a strange life (of which I already had an inner knowing as a child somehow) and so far I haven’t met any of the social & societal expectations for my age.
That’s because the Dark Goddess had & still has other plans for me. She marked me in my mother’s womb and brought me back from drowning. It took me some time to understand & acknowledge that I was her priestess & intermediary. I dwell on the threshold, a place where anything and everything is possible.

We All Wear Masks…Everyday

Crocodile Mask (Mali) – Hamill Gallery of African Art

The faces of family, social & societal expectations of who we should be and how we should behave.

The faces of routine & survival, pretending that everything is alright (or at least letting others believe that it’s the case) because we should conform.

While these ‘masks’ deny our voice and the expression of our true self, they should not burden us. They are just coping mechanisms for others to try to understand us and make sense of who we are (which is something that eludes them).

We can learn to play with these ‘masks’ like a role game, consciously choosing to be a real-life trickster and being everyday someone else ;). Thus we become the many-faced self, letting others believe whatever myth they want to believe about us because they just can’t grasp who we are (they could if only they were genuinely interested in us but the fact is they aren’t).

The everyday actor, the many-faced self can’t be controlled because nobody knows who he or she really is…Only YOU know your TRUE SELF, who you are at your core. Beware, however, not to get (mentally) lost in this masquerade…

Nine Worlds – Nine Chakras

Nine Chakras

I’m finalizing the ‘Nine Inner Worlds’ Guided Meditation & Chakra Activation, which is part of my Runic Healing Curriculum.
The downloadable pdf should be on my Etsy Shop some time next week. I will also be developing some Ritual Teas for each of the 9 Worlds to help with the (re)connection and enable magical & shamanic work.

A magical vision is hidden in the Irish language – we need to rediscover it

The Irish language derives from a world in which the unseen is as real as the seen. Photograph: Istock

“…there are some truths about the language that need to be acknowledged, though the grammarians and language academics might not agree. 1 Irish derives from a world in which the unseen is as real as the seen; 2 it acknowledges the existence of other dimensions; 3 it is based on an understanding that nature and the land are vibrant, sentient beings; 4 at its most potent can be a language of incantation, meaning that it has (or might have) the potential to summon up wishes, behaviours, people and things…”

Relationships with Entities & Spirits

We all have a different view on spirituality and our relationship to the divine. Some people are into worship, some have a more experiential approach while others may be very superstitious.

I have always considered Spirits as allies. They may train you, guide you, teach you, test you, challenge you, protect you…etc, but it’s never a one-way relationship. It’s very possible that some of them might have an agenda. But in a relationship, there is no hierarchy, no sense of ‘I’m in charge and you just follow’, it’s more like a trade-off: I do something for you & your spiritual growth/path and you do something for me/us. Most of the time (at least in my case) the other part of the ‘deal’ is not verbalized, but I am aware of doing some of the work while sleeping (even if I can’t remember it), just like I am when I do readings or heal people. I dwell on the threshold…
