Ehwaz Medicine for this Full Moon (April 2020)

In order to welcome another, one can’t be at war within the self.
Life is full of challenges and, as unpleasant as they are, they often are necessary for #change, growth and, in time, deep #healing.
Because the lessons that are learned through flesh, heart and mind are life time lessons that, once fully digested and understood for the wise teachings that they are, can lead to happiness as long as one is able to see the bigger picture, the unfolding pattern.
Clues are being given at all times, it’s up to the self to acknowledge them & understand them.
#guidance comes from being in tune with the #higherself. The other can sometimes show what the self can’t see or doesn’t want to know.
To welcome the other is to accept a different vision, a different point of view. The gift of newness is a fresh breeze and, ultimately, the #medicine of the other is companionship in mind, body & spirit.

Full Moon in Nauthiz

Full Moon in Nauthiz

Happy Nauthiz Full Moon folks!
I know we’re all going through rough times so hang in there, stay alive & thrive (even against the odds)… That is my wish for you.
I’m still finishing tomorrow’s Full Moon Rune Meditation. I hope to bring some of the Niflheim Tea I’m working on even if it’s not the exact formulation I want (I have to sub and adjust a couple ingredients but the result should be pretty close). Blessings.

Taking the Runic Meditations Further

Online Runic Meditations

In order to reach out more people (especially folks outside of California), I’m hoping to set up an online monthly interactive Full Moon Rune Meditation. It’ll be based on my current meditations but taken a bit further with my personal experience in Runic Healing and the unorthodox Runic Curriculum I’m developing.
I’m hoping to set things up by January with a required RSVP because I’d like to keep the group of participants relatively small.
Two weeks prior to the event, I plan to email the attendees a specific & exclusive Rune Tea recipe to prepare ahead of time for the day of the meditation in order to attune the whole body with the energy of the Rune and to take the journey inwards deeper & further.
I’m pretty excited about this project but I have a lot of groundwork to lay ahead first…

November Full Moon Rune Meditation in Nauthiz

November Rune Meditation

When you follow the runic calendar, the end of the year contains the most challenging Runes. The runic month of Hagalaz just ended (it started around Samhain) and now it’s the turn of Nauthiz (the next will be Isa). It can be an overwhelming time especially when the days are short and the weather cold. A sense of loneliness may also creep in… This Full Moon gathering will aim at keeping your spirit high and finding solutions from personal exploration & experience.
As usual, if you’re in Southern California and would like to join us, feel free to drop me a line or two.

Full Moon Reading: Sagittarius in Othila (May 2018)

FM May 2018

I know it’s been a while…But my attention was needed elsewhere and a lot has happened in just the last 2-3 weeks (the good & the bad).

But we’re not here to talk about me so let’s talk about today’s Full Moon, shall we?

The Moon is currently in Sagittarius, which supports freedom in all its guises. Which mean that it’s an auspicious time to be adventurous and take risks. If you’ve been thinking about starting a new project, a business…etc, now is the right time to do so. But remember the old saying ” the silence is golden”? You can talk a bit about it but not too much! And keep your pride in check as well!

We just entered the Runic month of Othila, which is about what makes you who you are: your ethics, your values, your personality…So this new venture of yours will be reflecting who you are deep down inside. Whatever it is that you are working on, make sure to align your thoughts, your intentions, and your actions. If you’ve been going through some kind of crisis and/or need to redefine yourself, Othila can help you in that endeavor.

No matter what your current situation may be, the Four of Vessels is pointing out the need to keep your head above the water so to speak. Don’t let people’s negativity or the current state of the world get to you (I know it’s sometimes easier said than done). If you feel a little lonely, just pick up your phone and surround yourself with people who are on the same wavelength, who appreciate you for who you are and support whatever you do or plan on doing. However, keep in mind that whatever is weighing you down needs to be named, acknowledged and dealt with at one point or another. But be conscious that you have all the resources you need within yourself and if you already know deep down inside what you need to do and where you need to tread, listen to your own voice above all and answer your own calling.

This Full Moon is supporting it as well as the Rune Dagaz, which speaks of overcoming obstacles and seeing things in a new light. It’s the air that you need to keep your head above the water (as I said earlier). Something is shifting within and around you (I can definitely feel it), whatever it is even if you can’t figure it out, know that it’s something positive. A veil has been lifted, the fog has burnt out, now you can see the sun rising on the horizon – what better omen can you get? With confidence and an optimistic mindset, success can be yours…

Lunar Beltane / Full Moon Runecast (Laguz/April 2018)

FM Runecast April30 2018

This Full Moon has been rather intense, even more so that the water Scorpio’s been backed up with more water coming from Laguz (we entered the Runic month of Laguz on Sunday). Water is all about emotions, reflection, sensitivity, dreams, intuition, intimacy…etc. Scorpio is considered to be a reliable and predictable sign but it does have a shadow side, which can be stirred up by the Full Moon and brought up to light & awareness. Scorpio is ruled by Pluto – Roman God of the Underworld, which means that secretive things and skeletons in the closet may well pay you an overdue & unwanted visit. But what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger and getting a bit of scorpion venom in your system will allow you to drop some of your load and come out of your journey to the Underworld refreshed & renewed.

If you’ve been working on a project, the Full Moon will give you some clarity. Now that everything is well defined, release your wish and let the Universe take care of the manifestation into the material realm.

The presence of Othila indicates that you have your bases covered and well anchored. What you’re doing is aligned with who you are and your personal values. Strong foundations are the building blocks of everything. Honor the nobility & sacredness of your path and/or calling. Inside the body, Othila is linked to the 2nd chakra which rules creativity & sexual energy (Scorpio rules the genitalia as well) so any imbalance on that level can hinder the healthy progression of your projects & dreams. Don’t be afraid to face the (wo)man in the mirror by addressing your own shadows. A little healing work will be beneficial and bring balance both to yourself and your situation.

Taking risks is part of the Scorpio’s game – the sting can either feel like Cupid’s arrow or slow dripping poison. The Student of Vessels says it’s time to take such risks. Enter the Scorpio’s dance, be open, be curious, and follow your intuition when it comes to love or other types of partnerships. But think with your heart rather than your raging hormones! Showing vulnerability can either strengthen bonds & connections or lead you to disappointment & heartbreak.

Life is a dance, nothing is easy. Sometimes it’s just a matter of being at the right time, at the right place & answering the call. But without taking any risks, there are no rewards. So trust yourself, trust your intuition and watch things unfold…

Full Moon Guidance (July 2017): Fehu & Solitude

Today we had our first Runic Meditation at the Wilderness Park. Though it was a hot day, we were blessed to find the outdoor amphitheater under the shade of tall pine trees.

Things went well. I introduced the Rune FEHU (1st of the 24 Runes of the Elder Futhark), and discussed its divinatory meaning and spiritual uses (as always with an emphasis on self-knowledge, inner alchemy & transformational work). I explained my take on the posture (also known as Stadhagaldr), energetic breathwork and how to overlay the Galdr (chanting or whispering) in order to deeply connect with Fehu. We ended our gathering with a meditation to retrieve a more personal meaning or message for each of the attendees. If you wish to be part of our next gathering (which will take place 2 weeks from now), you are welcome to join our Meetup group HERE.

Now let’s talk about Fehu some more. Well, it’s a Rune that is traditionally connected with growth, wealth and the material world. Fehu means “cattle”, which in Germanic tribes were both food (and therefore a mean for survival) and a currency. Some scholars speculate that Fehu was a later addition to the alphabet, since cattle were introduced during the Neolithic revolution – as opposed to the following Rune URUZ (the auroch: which was their wild, undomesticated relative) which obviously has a more ancient connection (for that reason I tend to believe that the alphabet was initially UTHARK, and that the Runes could date back to the last Ice Age). But Fehu and Uruz have a very different energy – Fehu is a somewhat harmonizing Rune.

If I had to define it in one sentence, it’d be “Know thyself and thou shalt know the Mysteries of the Gods and the Universe.” Why? Because Fehu invites us to look inwards for our inner wealth and our inner resources, which combined with the outer material resources available to us, will support our growth and the materialization/manifestation of our vision, goals, and dreams. It’s all about finding or re-establishing balance because as helpful as material wealth is in terms of survival and personal well-being, one’s true wealth lies inside.

This Full Moon has a very earthy side because it’s in Capricorn so it’s a good time to ground ourselves as well as our personal goals. Let’s analyze them in an objective way: are these goals and dream realistic and feasible or just wishful thinking? How can I make them real? What do I need to shed in order to make them happen?

In your quest for clear and honest answers, Solitude (the card above) is the key. Take the time necessary to rest and recharge your batteries, because you need clear thoughts, strong will, and energy (URUZ) to make things happen. Don’t be hard on yourself. You’ll get there slowly but surely, one step at a time. Pay close attention to your dreams and your intuition as they may hold some important clues. The night is an ally (notice the Moon, the Owl and the Moths on the card) so why not try some moon gazing? And who knows, the breeze might whispers things into your ears in a language more ancient than silence…

Full Moon in Othila/Odal (June 2017) – Runic Medicine Wheel

We are currently in the Runic Month of Othila (until June 13th). Othila is one of those Runes that can be a little tricky to decipher. Of course, like most Runes, it has many meanings, but here I’d like to focus on the aspect(s) that spoke to me the most.

PART 1: Defining Othila

Othila is both a very earthy and mystical Rune, it’s derived from the old Norwegian word ‘od’ that means “extasy, inspiration”, and as such there is an obvious connection with the god Odin. Othila is often linked to fertility and fecundity. It is also connected with property, heritage of land & of material belongings. But those 2 aspects don’t interest me today, I didn’t connect with them.

What interests me is the metaphysical aspects of Othila: heritage (through the genes & DNA) of people’s values, inherited/innate qualities, and people’s gifts (healing, divination, art,…etc). There are all aspects that are passed down to use, whether we are aware of not. Of course, there are also less pleasant, less glorious and even dark things that can be passed down to us as well. Some of these things might date back to several generations, and often disturbing things and events were kept in the utmost secrecy almost in a desperate attempt to erase them not only from memory but from History as well. We tend to think that what one doesn’t know will not hurt. Well sometimes it’s just not the case, because what was not told was however encoded in the genes and is either being replayed again and again at each generation or is being awaken many generations later (this were Family Constellations can be very helpful, it’s a powerful tool to set oneself free from unknown circumstances). These darker traits can take many forms ranging from genetic diseases or mutations to irrational behaviors, and addictions (to name a few). Know that History doesn’t have to repeat itself, I’ll talk some more about that shortly.

Another aspect of Othila that we need to consider is the Karmic heritage, which is stemming either from our immediate past (you know these little or big mistakes that we make along the way) and/or what you’ve done in your past lives. I want you that while “Karma is a Bitch” and cannot be suppressed, it can, however, be acknowledged (which is the first step towards healing), modified, alchemically transmuted (yes your inner lead, that heavy compost pile of yours, can be transformed into gold if you decide to work on it), and even (re)negotiated. Remember that at each incarnation you are being given an opportunity to improve your self and refine your soul, and it’s never too late to start.

PART 2: Connecting with AND using Othila Energetically

In this short video, I will show you how to use the Runic posture of Othila, connect with its energy, and overlay breathing as well as Galdr (the chanting of the Rune).

Be aware that body postures, hand gestures and Galdr can be used for healing (as in therapy/medicine) as well, but this is not our purpose here today.

PART 3: The Medicine of Othila

A/The Inner Alchemy of Othila

Over the past few years, I’ve done a lot of inner work in order to transform myself and the world around me. My main tool, besides my deep faith that things would get better, was the Runes. I used them energetically (in pathworking and for manifestation) as Galdr, Stádhagaldr (Runic yoga postures), and Runic mudras. I also did some extensive divination work to help me make the right choices, and figure what was coming my way. I also used & studied Glennie Kindred’s book on Inner Alchemy, which is based on the Celtic Wheel of the Year, and that made a lot of sense to me.

We are now in the month of June, in less than 2 weeks the Summer Solstice will be upon us (it’ll be the Runic month of Dagaz, the topic of a future blog post). Alchemically speaking, we are talking about the phase of Calcination. It’s an important phase, and you’re about to understand why. To quote Glennie Kindred:

“Calcination is the alchemist’s choice to activate the inner journey, and in this choice the ego and the will power become integrated with the desire for inner understanding and spiritual growth. Essentially through this choice the ego begins a journey to transform itself, to transcend the limitations, attachments and boundaries, and to expand upon the Limitless, the Infinite, Eternal Spirit.

The experience of Calcination, the alchemy of spiritual transformation, is symbolized by the Salamander, a mythical creature that lives in Fire. It thrives in it and revels in the transformation and change it creates. Other mythical Fire creatures are the Fire Dragon and the Phoenix, both symbols of transformation and rebirth. The Fire Dragon hatches from a golden egg and the Phoenix rises from the ashes of the old.

Although the Calcination experience can be consciously chosen, it can also be thrust upon us through all the life’s trials and tribulations, known as ‘Trial by Fire’. Also not easy at the time, these are out life lessons, the growth experiences through which we learn and develop our spiritual awareness and inner wisdom. The ego is humbled in the process and this helps us to develop integrity.”

What is the connection with Othila? The Phoenix holds the key. He first sets himself on Fire to burn away the old and strip away was is no longer needed (the wrong or false beliefs, the stories that we tell ourselves and others, the masks that we put on, the things we pretend…). In order to purify himself and retain only the true, the pure & deep essence of who/what he is at his core, the Phoenix needs to burn it all to ashes (that’s the Othila phase) before being reborn once more bigger, better & brighter than before (that’s the Dagaz phase, associated with the Summer Solstice). The ashes connect us with the ground, with our roots, with our values, with our heritage, with our Ancestors. The ashes are full of promises for what is to come in the next phase. Ashes feed to the soil, makes it fertile again. A healthy, fertile ground will allow you to grow, thrive and bloom into a better person and a better version of your current self. So take a moment to meditate and visualize what you no longer want in your life, what doesn’t suit you anymore, how you no longer want to be perceived…And turn it all to ashes!

B/Othila & the Elder Tree

One of the first plant I connected to as a budding herbalist was the Elder tree. There was one growing in my backyard, probably due to the proximity of the woods. Such a fascinating plant. It’s been used medicinally for more than a thousand years and was called “the medicine chest of the country people”, and will surely continue to bless us & heal us for a thousand more! While there’s a lot I could say about the ‘physical’ medicine of the Elder (that, itself, would require a blog post on its own), here I will focus on the metaphysical and esoteric properties of this plant.

In Celtic lore, the Elder was considered as the tree of regeneration (once again death & rebirth, very Phoenix-like), and associated with the Otherworld (the Sidhe). In Germanic and Northern lore, the tree is associated with Frau Holle (the German name of the Elder is Holunder) and Hel/Hela, Goddess of the Underworld (Realm of the Dead & the Ancestors).

In the Summer the tree is covered with creamy-white lacy flowers, then later towards the Fall, either black berries or blue berries (depending on where you live). If you wish to harvest your own medicine, just make sure you’re able to correctly identify your Elder, as any mistake could have consequences. If you’re not 100% sure then refrain from harvesting it. Dried Elder blossoms & berries are pretty easy to acquire these days.

However know that the Elder Crone demands to be treated with the utmost respect, as she can bestow both blessings and curses. I recommend that you connect with the Spirit of your local tree and its energy before even thinking about harvesting its medicine. The Lady will let you know if and when you are allowed to pick some.

C/How to Prepare the Medicine

Elder blossom tea

Now that we are energetically connected with Othila, let’s connect spiritually with the Rune.

In my view the oldest form of medicine on Earth, and the easiest one to prepare is tea. So we’re going to prepare an Elder blossom infusion as a little ritual to prepare us for the journey that will follow.

O’teala for One:

Boil one cup of water, then infused 1 teaspoon of dried Elder blossoms with the still hot water for about 10 minutes. Strain and enjoy (add a little bit of honey if necessary).

Sip your tea slowly, it will help you relax and prepare you mentally & spiritually for what follows.

D/How to Use the Medicine

This little exercise if for you to meet up with your Ancestors. It can be adapted to whatever spiritual medium works best for you: guided meditation, shamanic journey, lucid dreaming,  automatic writing or even oracle cards.

Set your intention(s) before you start: you may have a specific question to ask them or maybe just want to ask for their blessings on your journey. There is always a chance for the unexpected to happen during journeys like the warning of an imminent danger, or the legacy of a gift for example. Whatever happens, the information is yours and you can choose what to do (or not do) with it. It is also possible that the given information will not make sense currently but in the following weeks or months to come.

For guided meditations, start in an Elder Grove in the midst of which you will meet your Ancestors. For shamanic journeys, go down to the Underworld below the roots of the Elder tree. Whatever the method you are using, know that the Elder tree is a tree of protection so you should be safe. Don’t forget to thank your Ancestors before returning to the Middle World, and to keep a record of your findings for the future.
